The Principal’s Report for the academic year 2017-2018
Presented at the Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony
Held on the 30th June 2018
I am happy to present before you a detailed report on the activities of St. Paul’s Mission School for the period 1st April 2017 to 31st March 2018.

Results of the ICSE & ISC 2018

We are very happy to report that this year 49 candidates appeared for the ICSE and all received the pass certificate. In the ISC 105 students appeared and all were successful.

 The ICSE 2018 toppers from St. Paul’s Mission school are the following:

            SCIENCE?                             Rohit Das– 93 %

      COMMERCE            Manas Roy – 90.6%

 The ISC 2018 toppers from St. Paul’s Mission school are the following:

            SCIENCE?             Archisman Banik– 95.25%

      COMMERCE     Md. Obaid Ali – 84.75%

 School Functions

The Junior Prefects’ Investiture Ceremony was held on the 27th of April 2017. The Principal, Vice Principal & Junior School Head gave away the badges to the prefects from Classes III to V who had been elected by their colleagues.

The Senior Prefects’ Investiture Ceremony took place on the 28th of April 2017. Rev. Abir Adhikari, Hony Secretary of the BOG was present to give away the badges. It was a solemn occasion wherein the School Captains and House Captains elected from Class XII as well as the House Representatives and Class Leaders from classes VI to X, took the oath of allegiance and duty. Iqra Akhtar , outgoing school captain, handed over the ensign to Vineeta Singh, her successor.

Rabindra Jayanti: On the occasion of the 156th birth anniversary celebrations of the Bard of Bengal, students and teachers of St. Paul’s Mission School, senior and junior department, paid tribute to the Kobi Guru through a special cultural programs on the 8th of May 2017. The junior school function took place on the open courtyard in the traditional ‘rabindrik’ style while the senior school students performed in the school auditorium. The theme for this year’s celebration was, “Rabindranath and Humanism”.

The Junior School Prize Distribution was on the morning of 16th June 2017. Chief Guest, Mrs. Anjana Grace Biswas, Junior Head, La Martiniere for Girls’ School, gave away the certificates and prize books to the little prize winners. The Lady Carmichael trophy for the Best House (Jr) went to Wordsworth House. The Annual Report of the Junior section for the academic year 2016-17 was presented on the occasion by the Principal Ms. Sanchita Biswas.

The Middle School Prize Distribution for classes VI, VII & VIII was held at the school hall on the afternoon of the same day. Prof. Madhumanjari Mandal, associate Professor, Dept. of Botany, Scottish Church College, Kolkata, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. She gave away prizes to the prize winners from class VI to VIII.

 The Senior School prize Distribution was on the evening of 16th June 2017. The programme was presided over by His Grace The Rt. Rev. Ashoke Biswas, Chairman of the school. The Rt. Rev. Dr. P.C. Singh, Deputy Moderator, CNI Synod, was the Chief Guest.

 The Bishop’s Prize went to Roshan Chowrasia of Class XII, who had excelled in the field of academics amd co-curricular activities. The Principal’s Prize was awarded to Iqra Aktar, the outgoing school captain for her all round performance and show of responsibility. The David Raja Memorial Prize for Good Conduct was awarded to Anirban Mukherjee of class XII. Toppers of the ICSE & ISC 2017 were felicitated by His Grace. The Lady Carmichael Trophy for the Best House (Sr) went to Tennyson House once again.

The Annual Report was presented by the Principal, in the form of a slide show of school activities that took place in the academic year 2016-17.

World Anglo Indian Day:

A special assembly was organized by the students and teachers on the 1st of August 2017, to celebrate World Anglo Indian Day. On 2nd August, the Principal, Vice Principal and some teachers, attended the special thanksgiving mass held at St. James Church organized by the west Bengal chapter of the All Heads of Anglo Indian Schools in India (AHAISI).


Independence Day Celebrations:

On 15th August 2017, the staff and students of St. Paul’s Mission School celebrated the 171st Independence Day of the nation. On this occasion, a colourful cultural programme was organized in the senior school hall at 5 Scott Lane. The NCC wing of SPMS turned out smartly in their full uniform for the opening march past and rifle salute on the grounds. The Chief Guest, Mr. Amitava Ghosh, Officer-in-Charge, Amherst Street Police Station, unfurled the tricolour. Students and teachers of the Junior Section organized a food festival for all present.

Teachers’ Day Celebrations

Teacher’s day was observed on the 5th of September 2017. Senior and Junior students organized entertainment programs in their respective departments, for their teachers. There was also a special Prefects vs Teachers Football match organized on the previous day, which was won by the teachers!

 Preprimary, classes I & II Concert

The Noah’s Arc was performed by the children of Nursery to class II. It was put up on 1st and 2nd November 2017 at the senior school hall. The story line was based on the biblical story of the Great Flood. The script was written by Nursery class teacher Ayesha Hassan and Junior Head, Michelle Costar. The songs were customised by Angela Baidya and Michelle Costar. It was an enjoyable and learning experience for the 250 children on stage.

Indian Cultural Evening:

The evening of 10th November was one of great festivity when St. Paul’s Mission School organized ‘The Hues Of Humanism’, a cultural program, celebrating India’s humanity and cultural diversity. Over 150 students from the senior school participated in this mega event which showcased folk songs and dances from Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab. Besides these, students also performed to the traditional Rabindrasangeet and People’s Songs or Gonosongeet sung by a live choir.  It was an evening of enormously enjoyable live performance of music, songs and dance. 

Children’s Day Celebrations

On 14th November 2017, St. Paul’s Mission School teachers organized entertainment programs in both departments to treat the students on the occasion of Children’s Day. There were midget shows, dances, drama and songs performed by the teachers.  Children were also treated to some refreshment.

School Sports :

This academic year the School had its annual sports at the St Paul’s College ground, on 25th November 2017.

Junior Sports: The theme of the Annual Sports Day this year was ‘Kung Fu Karate. The races were all based on themes of physical fitness. The 2 drills performed by the children of classes I & II and classes III, IV & V were spectacular. Mr. Murtaza Lodgar, Junior Bengal Cricket Coach was Chief Guest. He took the salute during the march past and gave away the prizes.

 The Senior School Annual Sports Meet, 2017-18, was held at the St. Pauls’ C.M. College grounds on November 25th, 2017. Former Indian cricketer, Mr. Saradindu Mukherjee, graced the occasion as Chief Guest while veteran sports journalist, Debasis Dutta was the Guest of Honour. Parents, teachers, staff and other guests gathered to applaud the participants, who performed exceptionally well. The winners received medals and certificates from the Principal, Vice Principal, Chief Guest and other guests present. The senior school March Past and Drill by the middle school students was spectacular and much appreciated. Masefield House was declared the Champion house, with Keats House being the runners up.

DEM Fete

On Saturday, the 6th of December 2016, The Diocesan Education Mission (DEM) Fete was held at the St. Paul’s Cathedral ground. The DEM fete is a most awaited event that provides all with the opportunity to interact with many other schools.  Our school put up a lucky dip as well as an old clothes stall. Each lucky dip try was worth Rs. 100/- We raised around

 Rs. 1, 50,000 which was donated to the DEM Fund. In this regard I would like to thank all my teachers, office staff and students who helped to raise the said amount.

Leading up to the Fete, all students and staff of St Paul’s Mission School contributed through a raffle draw. A lucky hamper draw full of goodies, was organized by the school to award one winner from each class and section. The draw was held at the assembly and the class-teachers gave away the prizes.

The Nativity Programme

The Nativity play for the year 2017-18, held on 11th December, in the junior section, was a huge success, performed by the children of Nursery, KG, classes I and II. The Christmas carols were improvised using age old nursery rhyme tunes. Our little Santa Clause was a healthy child from the KG who played the character in a hilarious manner. The audience was most taken up by him.  We also had a Christmas tree, little angles, Mary and Joseph, all played by the little children from the KG. With this event in school we began the festive season and the long awaited winter

On 15th December 2017, the Nativity functions were held in the senior section. The nativity scene enacted by the students was accompanied by the merry carols that filled the air and heralded the Christmas season as we came to a close for the holidays.

As part of our social service initiative, the students raised money through class canteens to arrange large Christmas hampers for the students and teachers of the second school. Members of the staff were treated to a fellowship Christmas lunch.

Junior school Concert

This year classes III to V put up a musical based on the story of "Aladin".
It was a completely in house production directed and choreographed by the Junior school teachers. The show was staged at The Calcutta University Institute Hall on 14th and 15th December 2017. 250 students gave their best towards the success of the show.

 School Fete:

The St. Paul’s Mission School Fete was a pre-Christmas celebration organized on the 16th of December 2017. Rev. Abir Adhikari, Hony Secretary of the Board of Governors inaugurated the Fete.  It was a day of music, games, food and lots of fun. Each child received a free colourful cap and a packet of refreshment at the fete. There was also a special lottery with attractive gifts like wrist watch, bicycle and mobile phones to grab.

 Patronal day Exhibition

The Annual Patronal Day Exhibition was held on January 19th, 2018, on the junior section premise, where students from nursery to class XII, put up their exhibits. There were various stalls based on different subjects and themes. Parents, former students as well as teachers and students from different schools that were invited, appreciated the overall effort. The bright colourful morning witnessed the enthusiasm of the students in activities beyond their classrooms. 

135th  Patronal Day Service

On the 20th of January, 2017, St. Paul’s Mission School celebrated its 135th Patronal Day at a service held at the St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kolkata. His Grace, The Rt. Rev. Ashoke Biswas, Bishop of Calcutta and Chairman of the school, presided over the service and brought the word of God. Bishop Charles Samuel, Bishop of Penang, Malaysia, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. He was felicitated along with his team from the Diocese of Penang. The service was well attended by students and parents alike. At the end of the service all students were served a packet of refreshment. Guests and members of the staff were invited to lunch at the vicar’s lawn.

Republic Day

On 26th January 2017, Republic Day of the nation was observed through the raising of the tricolor. Company commander Maj. Dipak Kr. Singh and the NCC students gave the rifle salute before the National Anthem. All residential staff and their families were present.

Farewell for class XII:         

The Passing Out ceremony for the outgoing batch of ISC 2018 was held on the 31st of January 2018. The Principal, Vice Principal, Class Teachers & Senior coordinator addressed the students on behalf of the Chairman & the Board. It was a solemn occasion and every student was presented with a special year book.

Vietnam School Link

St. Paul’s Mission School has successfully established a link with the Saigon Star International School in Ho chi Minh, Vietnam. The Principal was fortunate to visit the said school in the 1st week of December 2017. It was an enriching visit which facilitated pedagogical exchange and sharing of teaching learning methods.

The Head teacher, Mr. Brendan Hearne and two other members of their faculty visited our school on the 14th of February. They took classes in both the junior and senior section and interacted with the staff and students. Plans for a reciprocal student exchange between the two schools working on a common project based on sustainable development, is in the offing.

In this regard, may I place on record my gratitude to the Chairman and the Board of Governors for their unstinted encouragement which is instrumental in the establishment of this link.

 Inter house activities:

 1.      The Inter House Basket Ball for Boys (Jr & Sr) was held in the second week of May2017.

2.      Inter House Basketball for Girls (Sr) took place in the first week of May2017.

3.      Inter House Throw ball for Girls was held in the third week of June.

4.      Inter House Throwball for Boys was held in the first week of July.

5.      Inter House Volleyball for Girls was held in the second week of July

6.      Inter House Volleyball for Boys was held in the third week of July.

7.      Inter House Football for Girls was held in the first week of August.

8.      Inter House Football for Boys was held in the second week of August.

9.      Inter house Bengali Elocution for classes III to XII was held in July 2017.

10.  Inter house Hindi Elocution for classes III to XII was held July 2017.

11.  Inter House English Elocution for classes III to X was held in July 2017.

12.  English Debate for classes XI & XII in August 2017.

13.  Inter House Football for junior and senior boys were held in the month of August 2017. Masefield emerged as winners.

14.  Inter House Quiz for the Junior, middle and Senior section, was held in November 2017

15.  Inter House Cricket for junior and senior boys were held in the month of December 2016. Masefield was winner, here as well.

 Interschool Participation

1.      Inter-School fest organised by South Point High School. St. Paul’s Mission School won the Judges Award Trophy for the inter school drama competition ‘Masquarade’.

2.      Josephsyna 2017 organised by St. Joseph’s College. St Paul’s Mission School won the 1st position in Eastern Dance, Face Painting & the surprise onstage event. Our school was placed 2nd in Coding, Photography, Antakshari, Bengali Skit & Poster making. The school was also place 3rd in Just a Minute and Non flame cooking. Nilesh Patra of class XII was adjudged Mr. Josephsyna 2017.

3.      Students took part in the  Inter-School science fest ‘ VIVA ’ 2017 organised by Pratt Memorial School on 20th and 21st June, 2017

4.      Students of classes VIII, IX, X took the Quiz test on 5th July, 2017, conducted by Carrier Launcher – a SSC , Banking & IAS Preparation Institute.

5.      Workshop held at the Anisha Counselling Centre, on ‘ Examination Related Anxiety in Students and Parents ’ was attended  by our students on 11th July, 2017.

6.      The school was represented by Dhruva Roychowdhury in the Derozio Memorial Extempore Speech Contest (2017) at The Frank Anthony Public School conducted by The All-India Anglo-Indian Association on 28th July, 2017.

7.      Students of classes IX to XII participated in the interschool theme quiz ‘The Big Music Quiz’organized by St. John’s Diocesan Girls’ School.

8.      Teachers and students visited the Science exhibition of St. Thomas’ Day School

9.      The school also participated in the Inter-school Keventer Cup Football Tournament ‘DEBANJAN CUP 2017’ from 15th July to 5th August, 2017.

10.  Sujal Lal of class VII has secured second position in a brain gym and mental maths competition, ‘SIP Prodigy 2017 ’, conducted by SIP ABACUS West Bengal. Around 3500 candidates aged 7 to 14 years from 98 SIP learning centres took part in the competition and Sujal came second in his category.

11.  The Zoological gardens, Alipore organized an unique zoo festival for the students, keeping in view the learning experience and the natural creativity of young minds on the theme of wildlife conservation. Different wildlife based workshops and competitions were organized. 55 schools and 25 colleges participated in the programme. Aman Singha of class XII received the 1st prize for tee shirt painting. He received a cash prize of Rs. 5000/-. Prizes were given away by veteran actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty and MLA Firad Hakim.

12.  Students participated in Uniana, a nature fest organised by Union Chapel School. Prizes were won for pot decoration, fashion designing and photography.

13.  Class X student, Subhadip Roy , representing St. Paul’s Mission School,  participated in the 63rd National School Water Polo Championship Tournament 2017-18 held in Pune, Maharashtra, and secured 3rd Position.

14.  Students took part in the UEM Scholastic Aptitude Test or UEMSAT 2017, a fun-filled challenge for students of class 12, that focuses on analytical and logical reasoning ; 57 out of 81 students who took the test, qualified for the 2nd round.

15.  Students took part in the Inter-school Football Tournament for girls, organized by La Martiniere for Girls School, on 16th August, 2017. The junior team reached the semi finals

16.  Students took part in ‘Protibimbo’, the Bengali Fest organised by St. Thomas for Girls School (Kidderpore)

17.  A team of 20 students visited the Indian Institute Of Chemical Biology on the occasion of their Open House Day on 24th October, 2017 to get a bird’s eye view of the modern aspects of research including instrumental techniques used in R & D at CSIR-IICB.

18.  Avishek Hela and Anirudh Jhulka represented the school at the annual inter school Hindi Debate Competition 2017 organised by Khalsa Model Senior Secondary School on 18th November, 2017.

19.   Students took part in the Annual Bible Fest ‘Deliverance’ organized by St. James’ School on 13th December, 2017.

20.  Students and teachers participated in the Inter-school Carol singing competition ‘Feliz Navidad’ at St. Thomas day School on 14th December, 2017.

21.  Students also took the The TTIS Challenge 2018, a four day event full of various activities, organized by ABP Pvt Ltd, from 17th January 2018 to 20th January 2018.

22.  Representatives from Sony BBC Earth Channel conducted a science workshop for  classes 6 to 9 on 13th February, 2018.

23.  A workshop on Model United Nations ( MUN) for classes 8, 9 and 11 was conducted on 8th March, 2018, by students of Jadavpur University. Eleven student delegates from St. Paul’s Mission School attended the Jadavpur University Model United Nations 2018, from the 29th to the 31st of March 2018. It was a good learning experience for them.

 Social Service

St. Paul’s students collected money by organizing class canteens and used the same for their social service visits.

In October 2017, just before Diwali, a social service visit was organized for all students of class XII to the two local orphanages: Refuge and Swamiji Sanga. Gifts and monthly provisions were donated for use of these organisations.

In December, before Christmas, students of class XI, visited the Arunima Hospice, the Mulvany House and the Santinivas with bags full of goodies and provisions.

The visits to the orphanages and old age homes are enriching experiences for our students which teach them to care and share with the underpriviledged.

I thank the Members of the Board of Governors for the time they have spared and the encouragement they have given in all matters related to the school. My heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Nyss, the Vice Principal, Head of Junior deprtment Ms. Costar, coordinators of the Middle and Senior section, all teachers, office staff, service staff, parents and students for their active support, participation and cooperation in all matters related to the school. Last but not least, I thank The Almighty for the loving presence and care with which He blesses our school.
