A Legacy of Educational Excellence
Spanning 140+ years of commitment to service and education
St. Paul’s Mission School began with a vision of love and education. In the Sealdah area, members of the Women’s Fellowship for Christian Services (WFCS), guided by Lady Carmichael, started a Home for underprivileged girls with just five children. Their selfless dedication set the foundation for what would become a pillar of inclusive education in Kolkata.
The home moved across several locations — Bowbazar (1875), Scott Lane (1876), Huzuri Mall Lane (1882), and finally 73 Serpentine Lane (1884), which remains the Junior School’s premises today.
Under Rev. Jackson, the first Rector, and later Rev. Robson and Canon Catley, the school’s religious and academic structure was strengthened, building a legacy rooted in faith and education.
Financial turmoil struck, threatening closure. Canon Basil Manuel and Mrs. Phyllis Pearson (Principal, Pratt Memorial School) stepped in, supporting girls from the hostel. In 1977, Mr. David Raja became Principal, marking the start of the school’s golden era.
The school celebrated 100 years of service. Bishop D.C. Gorai unveiled commemorative plaques, and The Statesman featured the institution for its century-long dedication.
Under Mr. Richard Flynn, ISC Commerce & Humanities streams were introduced via an Afternoon Session, enabling continuity in senior secondary education for students.
The first Lady Principal, Mrs. Barbara Ann Raha, brought a renewed focus on discipline, NCC (39 Bengal Battalion), and launched the “Paularian” magazine. She integrated ISC streams into regular school hours.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Sanchita Biswas, the school entered a period of modernization. Smart classrooms, AI & Robotics, a new website (2014), library expansion, and co-curricular growth transformed student life.
St. Paul’s Mission School is now a forward-thinking, inclusive co-educational institution offering ICSE and ISC curricula with Science and Commerce streams. Equipped with computer labs, AI-enabled classrooms, and a vibrant co-curricular ecosystem, it remains true to its founding mission.
"Nil Desperandum — Look ahead and never despair." continues to guide every Paularian.
